 Este Ceramiche’s whimsical trompe-l’oeil creations trace their origins to archival designs rediscovered in the 1950s by the grandfather of current owner Giovanni Fadigati. In this Italian atelier’s world, tables brim with both wit and craftsmanship—where lemon slices glisten, chocolate truffles tempt, and garden vegetables delight the eye, though all are but ceramic illusions. Now, the house extends its repertoire of visual trickery with a fungi twist on its Bristol series, each mushroom painted entirely by hand.

 Este Ceramiche’s trompe-l’oeil ceramics may look good enough to eat, but don’t be fooled—they belong firmly on the table. Through a faux feast of nuts, this expertly handcrafted and hand-painted serving dish is a playful display of the theatricality of dining.

 When looking for inspiration, Suk Keun Kang simply looks around him, drawing from the quirks and characteristics of the natural world. He works from his rural base in Ulsan, Korea, carving each piece by hand and using the eco-friendly ottchil technique. This involves applying more than 30 coats of lacquer—derived from the sap of rhus trees—to create a protective film that resists spills and stains. Each one-of-a-kind piece is durable, hard-wearing, and ideal for serving food.

 Handcrafted in Yatsuo, Toyama, Keijusha's treasure boxes are handmade from locally produced washi. The paper is first wrinkle-processed for strength and texture, then decorated using katazome, a traditional stencil-resist technique. Artisans place hand-cut stencils onto the washi and apply rice-starch paste before brushing layers of vivid pigment. After washing and drying, the patterned sheets are carefully formed into the functional, eye-catching piece you see here.
